Since its birth in the 10th century, Brussels has undergone major changes, culminating in it becoming the capital of Europe in the 20th century. The City continues to grow and develop, in terms of population, green spaces, public areas and urban infrastructure. With this growth also comes a growing need for housing, safety for residents and support for diversity.
In order to manage this development, the City aspires to be an evolving city, which constantly adapts to the needs and expectations of its current and future inhabitants, as well as to new trends and social and technological developments.
The Smart City integrates the challenges of climate change into building and densification projects, and fosters a sense of safety through intelligent design and management of public space.
With this in mind, the City is developing lively and pleasant neighbourhoods by encouraging a functional and social mix of housing, thus preventing the deterioration and vacancy of buildings and the creation of urban no-man’s-lands.
