10-Minute city
The 10-Minute City application is online!
The City of Brussels is unveiling its new ’10-Minute City’ IT platform! With this application, the City shares with you the databases it produces or centralises, and lets you discover the facilities and services available within 10 minutes of your home.
What is the 10-Minute City?
The ‘10-Minute City’ is both a territorial development principle and an online cartographic information tool.
As an urban planning concept, it aims to offer all citizens, residents and users equal access, at any point in the City of Brussels, to all the facilities and services that make up the quality of urban life within a ten-minute walk. Inspired by cities such as Paris, Melbourne and Montreal, this model has been mobilised and developed by Brussels as part of its Municipal Sustainable Development Plan, BXL 2050, to move towards a polycentric organisation of hyper proximity combining functional and social diversity.
As a dynamic mapping tool, the City of Brussels, in partnership with a Belgian academic consortium, has developed a computer application that integrates and geolocates 72 varieties of facilities and services divided into four themes: living together, environment & living environment, mobility, and residential economy. These variables cover 15 sub-themes, including youth, green spaces, health and public transport. This interactive tool, which is updated regularly, gives an overview of the range of services and facilities available throughout Brussels and neighbouring municipalities. It takes into account not only the presence of facilities but also their accessibility in terms of walking time.
Faced with challenges such as demographic growth, the reduction of carbon-based mobility, and social and environmental justice, the ‘10-minute city’ mapping tool enables the administration to plan the development of the area. It helps to identify gaps in services and prioritise investment to improve accessibility and infrastructure capacity, create new units or renovate existing ones. The City of Brussels aims to ensure a balanced distribution of infrastructure and services throughout the territory.
How does it work in practice?
The application asks you to click on a location on the map (your address or a place that interests you). Once you've chosen your location, the tool shows you all the facilities and services available within 10 minutes.
You can then find out more about them and learn more about the area you've chosen. The map is interactive, so you can get basic information by clicking on a point. This first version of the application will evolve over time, soon incorporating new variables and more detailed information on service saturation, timetables and booking procedures.
