BrusAir: street-by-street air quality maps for the City of Brussels
BrusAir was developed by BuildWind SRL as part of the City of Brussels' Smart City 2024 call for projects. The project consists of a platform that provides an air quality map of Brussels city centre and the Northern district.
The clear, highly detailed map, which is free and available online at www.brusair.be, enables residents and businesses to check the air quality around them every hour. The special feature of this project is that it combines air-quality station data from Brussels Environment, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and artificial intelligence. This model enables air quality simulation* maps to be produced every hour for the whole of the city centre and the Northern Quarter, with a resolution of one metre.
Citizens can now check the air quality in their street, on their daily commute or in a playground, and then decide to take a cleaner route, ventilate their home or postpone an outdoor activity. Air quality varies greatly from one hour of the day to the next.
The city administration uses a back-office website to keep a history of this data and access more advanced monitoring tools. This enables the City to make better decisions.
* Disclaimer: Every simulation model is subject to a margin of error, as a simulation is a simplification of reality and relies on assumptions and input data that can never be perfectly complete or accurate.
