Multimodal Traffic Flow Analysis at an intersection
Thanks to its innovative solution based on LiDAR and artificial intelligence, Flow Analytics by AGC is transforming how Brussels analyzes urban traffic. Winner of the Smart City 2023 project call, this initiative is part of a smart city strategy focused on data and the Internet of Things (IoT).
LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), a cutting-edge technology, generates a 3D map of the environment without capturing personal information, unlike cameras. It thus ensures privacy while providing a precise view of traffic.
Two LiDAR sensors were installed for six months at a strategic intersection in Brussels (the junction of Empress Charlotte Avenue and Houba de Strooper Avenue), covering an area of 450 m². These two sensors operate in fusion mode for greater accuracy and coverage.
Each day, approximately 35,000 objects (pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles) are detected, classified, and analyzed using artificial intelligence. An interactive dashboard allows monitoring of traffic flows, their speed, and their origin/destination.
This intelligent analysis helps the City rethink its urban planning by considering user interactions, areas where dangerous situations often occur, common routes, and peak traffic times. It also enables anticipation of safety needs and emergency interventions. By streamlining traffic and enhancing the safety of vulnerable users, this monitoring system becomes an essential tool for the city, aiming to adopt smarter and more inclusive mobility.
